Our Story

Introduction

The Man Behind the Name

Prior to its grand opening in 1995, the governing committee faced a meaningful question: what should the Mahavidyalaya be named? After deep deliberation, it was proposed to honour a personality who had played a pivotal role in securing basic amenities for the displaced population during the construction of the Bokaro Steel Plant — Sohanlal Thakur, an ardent supporter of the Arya Samaj and a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi.

Born on August 15, 1924, in Samsapur village of the Gogri region (present-day Khagaria district, Bihar), Sohanlal Thakur was a true humanitarian. He believed displaced families deserved not just financial aid but quality education, and he lived among them for years, working tirelessly across every domain of welfare.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice

Sohanlal Thakur played an active role in the nationwide Quit India Movement of 1942, during which he was imprisoned multiple times. After Independence in 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru — believing the youth should take charge of the nation — sent Sohanlal a congratulatory message on his 30th birthday, coinciding with India's 7th Independence Day on August 15, 1954, urging him to represent and lead his community.

Received a personal message from Prime Minister Nehru on his 30th birthday, urging him into leadership — which he humbly declined.

Passed away, leaving behind an enduring legacy of compassion and selfless service.

In His Honour

The governing committee named the institution "Sohan Lal Arya Mahavidyalaya" as a lasting tribute.

1995

Sohan Lal Arya Mahavidyalaya officially opens. The college begins its mission of providing higher education to the region's underserved communities.

महाविद्यालय का नामकरण :-
वर्ष 1995 में इस महाविद्यालय की स्थापना के समय कार्यकारिणी समिति के सामने एक समस्या थी कि महाविद्यालय का नाम क्या रखा जाय? काफी मंथन के पश्चात अंततः प्रस्ताव आया कि बोकारो स्टील प्लांट बनते समय विस्थापितों को सुविधा प्रदान कराने में अहम भूमिका निभाने वाले सोहनलाल ठाकुर के नाम पर महाविद्यालय का नामकरण किया जाए। 14 अगस्त 1980 की मध्य रात्रि वह फरिश्ता हमारे बीच से चल बसे। उनके नाम से महाविद्यालय की स्थापना कर हम उन्हें श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करते हैं — अतः इस महाविद्यालय का नाम "सोहनलाल आर्य महाविद्यालय" रखा गया।

महाविद्यालय स्थापना के उद्देश्य

महाविद्यालय की स्थापना का उद्देश्य इस क्षेत्र के वैसे छात्र-छात्राओं को शिक्षा देना है जो उच्च शिक्षा से वंचित रह जाते हैं। यह क्षेत्र अत्यन्त पिछड़ा हुआ क्षेत्र है, यहाँ छात्र-छात्राओं के लिए उच्च शिक्षा हेतु कोई महाविद्यालय नहीं था। छात्र तो दूरस्थ इलाकों में जाकर अध्ययन कर लेते थे, किन्तु छात्राओं को उच्च शिक्षा से वंचित होना पड़ता था। वर्ष 1995 में इस महाविद्यालय के खुलने से छात्र-छात्राओं को शिक्षा का समुचित लाभ मिल रहा है, क्योंकि शिक्षा ही विकास की रीढ़ होती है।
